I have spent most of my working life making ceramic jewellery. On the point of giving up working with clay altogether a twist of fate, a couple of years ago, made me return to practising what I specialised in during my training and what I enjoy the most which is making one-off pots.
I now make slab-built sculptural ceramics, the majority of which are a playful take on classical container forms, especially the bottle. These pieces, particularly when displayed in groups, have an animated almost human air about them.
Although I work from templates slight variations in assembly make each piece unique.
Most of my work is glazed and then raku fired (a Japanese firing technique carried out outdoors). Other pots are coated in a crackle slip and fired in an electric kiln which produces a matt, more subtle crackle pattern than raku. Both firing techniques give unpredictable results which adds to the uniqueness of each piece.
