Kirsty Wither - Colourful Language
Kirsty Wither –
COLOURFUL LANGUAGE
My paintings are primarily about colour: not simplistic or sweet, but with an emphasis on building layers and placing hot and cool colours together. It’s about finding those unexpected combinations that give a landscape or flower its own personality.
Never working from life, I relish the liberation of creating something from an idea and my own recollection. The image develops on the canvas: an energetic and sometimes lengthy process of adding and subtracting tones with palette knife, brushes and fingers. Above all, I want my work to be uplifting – people often have an immediate, visceral response to art, and if that can be a joyful one, then that is what I am aiming for.

“A laden brush and palette knife give body to her pictures. Consequently the colour in a painting is rich, but it is much more than decorative. On the contrary, her pictures have a very satisfactory kind of poetic solidity.”
