Sam Lock
Sam Lock
Lock paints viscerally. Using blowtorches and electric sanders as well as the brush, he ages and wears his canvasses down, making them seem all the more natural. At its core, his work conveys the passage of time; colours, movement and characters that are half-recalled, uncertain.
Whilst at college, Lock won a scholarship award to travel to Rome to explore his interest in the relationship between history, archaeology and the processes of painting, a preoccupation that has fired his work and continues to underpin his practice.
