Maroulla Simmonds
Contemporary abstract paintings in oil using simple modern design. Maroulla’s latest paintings are inspired by the ocean, its mystery, colours and translucency.
Using oil paint in thin transparent glazes and rich colours, a luminous quality is created to complement the subject theme perfectly.
With an interest in contemporary abstraction, accurate representation is bypassed to allow the viewer space for exploration and interpretation. Maroulla is inspired firstly by “the gentle yet impactful use of colour in the paintings by Monet, particularly his waterlily paintings. Also, I’m inspired by the abstracted paintings of the New York contemporary artist Brian Rutenberg and his ethereal use of colour and form.
“I discovered a love of painting on small boards following some experimentation in looking for quick compositional ideas. I’m presently also working on canvas up to 60cm x 60 cm and aiming for much larger paintings over next few months.
Continually looking for new ways to push into further abstraction and simpler modern design, this appeals to me the most. Visual textural effects are also very interesting to me so always searching for new ways to bring this into my work using thin, runny glazes of oil paint.
Living in Brighton and extensive travel around the world have all played a part in stimulating curiosity and a desire to capture the light and mystical nature of this life-giving source.”
