Bad Boys is Kevin Hendley’s first solo show in the UK. One of the gallery’s most collected artists, his work is rich, layered, diverse and supremely painterly. His obsession with the techniques and tones of the old masters is very much in evidence but as always, the subjects are contemporary.
Introduction
Once a week Kevin heads to London or into Brighton to search for interesting characters to paint. He might see a particular hat, a pair of glasses or coat that catches his eye. A surreptitious photo is taken for reference and the idea for a new painting starts to take shape.
Back in the studio he uses oils, always oils, particularly heavy, old fashioned lead based oils because ‘you can scrub and scrape and scratch and layer and glaze.’ That scrubbing and scratching results in stunning finished works that easily draw you in with their supreme quality.
