Claire Beattie

"I like to make drawings and paintings, at times decorative in nature, and which feature repetitive motifs, that record my responses to the landscape that I encounter around my home in the Scottish Borders."

"The compositions that emerge, although not strictly topographical, are based on and abstracted from photographs, sketches, actual experiences and memories of the roadsides, hillsides, moorlands and woods of my environment."

"I want to create a sense of the fleeting moment, of a place glimpsed or remembered."

"My working process involves building up surfaces and layers of drawn and painted lines and then repeatedly stripping them back and obscuring them. In this way a complicated tracery of line and shape emerges to create a rich and visually interesting surface. Abstract elements such as the spaces between features in the landscape, be it fence-posts or the spaces between tree trunks and branches and large bands of solid colour create tension within the composition"
